Sales tax calculator
Add sales tax to a price, or work out the pre-tax price from a total that already includes tax, in the currency you choose.
Fill in the fields and press Calculate to see your result here.
How this calculation works
Adding tax multiplies the price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). Removing tax works backwards, dividing the tax-included total by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to recover the pre-tax price, then subtracting to find the tax portion. The currency picker only changes the symbol shown — it does not convert your numbers.
Tips
Sales tax rates vary by location
Combined state, county and city rates differ widely — check your local rate rather than assuming a nationwide figure.
Check whether the price already includes tax
In many countries, including most of Europe, shelf prices already include VAT. In the US they usually don't. Use the Remove tax tab when tax is already included.
Not everything is taxed the same
Groceries, clothing, medicine and services can have reduced rates or exemptions depending on where you are.
Enter the combined rate
If you pay both a state and a local tax, add the two percentages and enter the total once.
Frequently asked questions
Why would I need to remove tax from a total?
It's useful for expense reports or bookkeeping when a receipt only shows the final total and you need to know the pre-tax amount.
Does this handle multiple tax rates stacked together?
Enter the combined total rate (state + local, for example) as a single percentage for an accurate result.
