Average / mean calculator

Enter a list of numbers, separated by commas or spaces, to find the mean, median, mode and more.

You can paste a list from a spreadsheet column too.

How this calculation works

The mean is the sum of all values divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted (or the average of the two middle values, for an even count). The mode is whichever value appears most often; if every value appears equally often, there is no mode.

Worked example

For the list 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42: the mean is (4+8+15+16+23+42) ÷ 6 = 18; sorted, the two middle values are 15 and 16, so the median is 15.5; and since no value repeats, there is no mode.

Tips

Mean vs. median

A few very large or very small numbers pull the mean toward them but barely affect the median — check both if a data set has outliers.

Any separator works

Numbers can be separated by commas, spaces, or line breaks pasted from a spreadsheet — the calculator handles all three.

This treats every number equally

For values with different weights, such as course grades with different credit hours, use the GPA calculator instead of a plain average.

A data set can have more than one mode

If several values tie for most frequent, there is no single mode. If every value appears only once, there is no mode at all.

Small samples can mislead

A mean of two or three numbers moves a lot when one value changes. The more numbers you include, the steadier the average.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if there's no repeated number?

Then there is no mode, and the calculator will say so rather than showing a misleading value.

Does order matter?

No. The numbers can be entered in any order; the calculator sorts them internally to find the median.
