Fuel cost calculator
Find the total fuel cost of a trip from the distance, your car's fuel economy, and the price of fuel.
Fill in the fields and press Calculate to see your result here.
How this calculation works
In the mpg version, gallons used = distance ÷ mpg, then multiplied by the price per gallon. In the liters version, fuel use is given directly as liters per 100 km, so liters used = distance ÷ 100 × (L per 100 km), multiplied by the price per liter.
Tips
Use your actual recent fuel economy, not the sticker number
Real-world mpg or L/100km is often a bit worse than the official rating, especially for city driving or a heavily loaded car.
Don't forget round trips
For a return journey, double the distance before you calculate.
Add tolls and parking
Fuel is only part of the cost of a trip. Add tolls, parking and ferries for a fuller picture.
City and motorway differ
Fuel economy changes with speed and traffic. Use figures that match the kind of driving you'll actually do.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include tolls or other trip costs?
No, this is fuel cost only. Add tolls, parking or other expenses separately for a full trip budget.
Can I compare a road trip against flying?
Not directly here, but once you have your fuel cost, you can compare it against a flight or train fare yourself, factoring in your own time and convenience preferences.
